Australia Set to Ban Immigrants from Living in Sydney, Melbourne?

Australia is planning to impose a law that will ban migrants from living in Sydney and Melbourne. As a part of a plan for growing Sydney, the land down under seems as if it would require overseas workers to settle outside its two big cities. Will this benefit the said cities?

A bad news for overseas workers, as well as for those migrants who are planning to start up a business in Sydney and in Melbourne: the land down under is planning to impose stricter rules to the two big cities’ residents. According to reports, Australia is likely to set a new visa condition targeting the migrants who are merely sponsored by companies or those who were only granted family visas. The supposed rule is said to force them to just live outside Sydney and Melbourne for five years.migration_access

The new rule stemmed as a plan for growing Sydney in order to solve the fast-growing population. As per the Population and Urban Infrastructure Minister, Alan Tudge, Australia’s population “has been growing at a rapid rate of 1.6%” per year and many of which came from Sydney and Melbourne. “Melbourne last year grew by 2.7%, Sydney by 2.1%,” explained Tudge. Tudge further explained that the overall costs of congestion to Australia’s economy are “already great, and rising steeply.” Thus, he sees this as a “serious challenge” for families as well as for the nation’s economy.

But while it still isn’t official yet, experts have already raised their doubts about the new policy as a plan for growing Sydney. Cities Research Institute’s Dr. Tony Matthews suspects the floating law’s viability. While Matthews acknowledges the fact that it would benefit both parties, he believes that i is “unsustainable to continue with the current model” with the number of immigrants migrating to Sydney and Melbourne because “it’s creating significant pressure.”

Furthermore, it is feared that it might affect the people’s rights, especially those who plan to start a Sydney business. In an interview with Paul Burton, the said Institute’s director, he believes that the planned law will not just restrict people’s rights to live but it will also “interfere with market forces.”

Apparently, this is not the first time that the law has been proposed. Just this August, Morrison has already brought up the said topic and experts have been raising doubts about it as well. “Little visa sticks and small relocation inducement carrots will do little but annoy some people, disappoint others and waste some scarce public money,” Burton explained. He reiterated that the government should “think bigger and more boldly.”
